Taos has a colorful history. The area was settled in 1350 by Tiwa speaking Indians at the present site of the Taos Pueblo. In 1796 the town was founded by Spanish Colonists and was originally name Don Fernando de Taos. Kit Carson, Governor Bent and fur trappers and traders followed. In 1898 two artists who painted scenic ads for the railroads had their wagon break down as they entered into Taos. It is known as the 'Broken Wheel Incident'. From that day forward, Taos has attracted hundreds of artists and the Society of Taos Artists was established. Other celebrities followed soon after. Names such as Mabel Dodge Lujan, Ernest Blumenschein, Millicent Rodgers, D.H. Lawrence visited Taos, and stayed. |
